Why buy insurance from a UK based company like Insurance for homes abroad?
If you own a holiday home in France, Spain, Portugal, Greece and her islands, Ireland, Cyprus or Malta, you will need to buy specially de- signed insurance to cover your holiday home. You can buy insurance in the country where you property is situated, but there are some things to consider carefully before doing this. Firstly, would that insurer offer you all your policy 'small print' in English, and explain eve- rything to you, so that you are completely clear on conditions and restrictions of your cover? Would the company have access to English speaking staff who can keep you informed of progress, literally in a language that you would understand? You do not want to feel aban- doned by your insurer when you need them the most. Here at Insurance for homes abroad, we administer everything in English, while using a network of loss adjusters based in and experts about the countries where we offer insurance cover. All designed to make the claiming process, when it is required, as smooth as possible. Secondly you need to consider how is your foreign insurance company reg- ulated – we are regulated by the FSA with their strict codes of practice.
What do insurers class as a holiday home?
It is important to understand this in order to make sure that you buy the right kind of insurance. You own a holiday home if:
You use the property for recreational use for holidays and short breaks
You let the property out for recreational holidays or short breaks, none of which must exceed 6 weeks.
The property fits in with what your insurer would perceive as being used for holiday use. You would need to discuss the actual use of a flat in central Paris or Rome for example.
You meet the criteria for regular inspections. If you property is left empty and uninspected for long periods, it will not be classed as a holiday home and will require different insurance cover.
What are the benefits of the cover we offer you?
We offer comprehensive cover underwritten by Lloyds of London, one of the world's largest and most established insurers. Cover in- cludes the following, though the list is not exhaustive:
Buildings – cover against damage by earthquake (in some areas of Europe) fire, lightning, storm, flood, water leaks (including frost damage) falling trees or aircraft. Your building must be of standard construction and if you are in doubt about this, or know that your property is of different construction, you must discuss this with us.
Breakages - windows, glass doors and ceilings, sanitary ware, ceramic hobs. Damage by thieves, riot and other malicious damage. Acci- dental damage by guests, paying and non-paying in your home.
Contents - damage and breakage as above for the contents of your holiday home as well as theft of objects. Public Liability to £5 million - crucial cover in these days of increased litigation cases, insuring you against claims by those staying in your holiday home, paying or non-paying, for damage to themselves or their property.
Full cover while the buildings are unoccupied - subject to the usual conditions on holiday home insurance regarding regular inspection.
Alternative accommodation if required- cover as standard
Loss of rent from pre-booked rentals - cover of to £35,000 for loss of revenue from paying guests who had already booked to stay in the insured property.
And in addition, we automatically include cover for your swimming pool, including public liability and we can also extend cover to in- clude any domestic staff employed in the insured property.
